Church Street Hogie from Taylor Gourmet Deli in Washington, DC
Spicy homemade Italian sausage, sauteed onions and peppers, and mozzarella (they were out of provolone, which normally goes on this sandwich).
I didn’t really know how much food this was going to be, so I ordered the larger size. It was far too huge, but made for great drunk food the next day.

Steak Bowl at ShopHouse in Washington, DC.
Made my return to the lone location of Chipotle’s little brother today. Still a huge fan of the spicy corn. And I remembered from a previous visit that I did not like the noodles, so I went with Jasmine rice.

The Banana Upside-Down Cake at Clyde’s in Washington, DC was amazing. Better than mom’s famous Banana Bars? Nothing’s better than mom’s… but it was up there. Wow. My favorite dessert I’ve had all year.
And it came after a Browns victory; which was enjoyed in a room full of vocal (drunk) Browns fans. What could be better?

Haven’t posted anything from B Spot in a while.
This is the Porky Burger. BBQ pulled pork, coleslaw, Cleveland BBQ sauce, and bacon top this one. The reason why I’m posting this is to spread the word about their Happy Hour, which runs 3-6p during the week. $5 Burgers, $3 Beers, $2 Brats. Pretty unreal. Check it out.

Chili Half Smoke from Ben’s Next Door in Washington, DC
Wouldn’t get relish on it next time. It didn’t really go well with the chili and onions. However, it definitely did not take away from the amazing drunk food factor.

O’Betty’s in Athens, Ohio.
I grabbed a “Blaze” last weekend when I was in town for Homecoming. Rest assured, fellow alums - it’s still amazing. Just seeing this sign is total “drunk recall” moment for me.

Wheel of Gelato at The Spread Buffet within Horseshoe Casino Cleveland
Flavors include: Cream Caramel, Yoghurt, Coffee, Banana, Tiramisu, Hazelnut, Chocolate, Pistashio, Vanilla, Strawberry, Nutella, and Stracciatella
And from now until the end of September, anyone who earns 25 Tier Credits gets a free buffet. My mom is one of the smallest gamblers I know, and she got to that level pretty easily. Good luck!

EDIT: It has now been extended through October.

Hokkaido Ramen at NoodleCat in Downtown Cleveland, Ohio
Roasted pork, butter, chili oil, corn in a miso-corn broth
After many Sunday Happy Hours here, I’ve gotta say that this is probably my favorite noodle dish on the menu. Rich, but spicy. Plus, it has pulled pork in it - so come on. Corn in soups is always a winner for me (like this one from Zola in Washington DC); and this was no different.

Pork Arepa at Barroco Grill in Lakewood, Ohio (extreme close-up edition)
A grilled white corn pocket filled with roasted pork, peppers, mushrooms, onions, corn, and mozzarella.
I’ve been itching to try this place for weeks now, and finally the opportunity presented itself today. After a quick walk from the W. 117th train stop, I popped into the little store front, and enjoyed what Food Network called “the best sandwich in Ohio”. I’m not so sure I would call it a sandwich, but I will say that its place on any “best of” list is well deserved. Everything about it was amazing, no way around it.
They also brought out five different sauces to accompany the food. That might have been my favorite part. I mixed it up bite-by-bite, switching from garlic to chimmichurri to ranchero and back again. The spicy peanut was also killer (while not too hot). I’m not too crazy for pineapple, so I laid off that one for the most part; but in the samples I had, it wasn’t overly sweet.
In my reviews, I normally like to stick to the food - while leaving out decor, atmosphere, music, etc. (the stupid stuff that other food blogs talk about…) But I have to say that I really felt at home in this place. Loud music, sharpie writing on the walls, the BYOB-friendly attitude… it just felt like Athens to me; and I loved that. Over the last few months I’ve been extremely nostalgic for my college town, and am counting the days til Homecoming weekend.
But back to Barroco… I can’t say enough about this place. It was great - and I’ve only been there once. Needless to say, I’m already plotting a return trip.

Frenched Pork Chop at Nicolinni’s in Boardman, Ohio
Wrapped in bacon and cooked on a wood-fired grill. Been on a pork chop kick ever since I had Lolita’s. This one ranks under Michael Symon’s, but only slightly. Incredibly juicy and smokey (via the bacon and grilling).
I wouldn’t make the hour drive just for this meal; but I have a three week old nephew that lives about five minutes away. So that should provide an acceptable excuse for years to come.

Paella Valenciana at Mallorca in Cleveland, Ohio
Saffron rice, all sorts of shellfish (including heaps of shrimp and a lobster tail), roasted red peppers, sausage slices, and peas.
Didn’t have the soccarat (explained here by the “Paella Professor”) that Paella is supposed to have; but it was still amazing. And when they said they have “generous portions”, they meant it.

Mallorca in the Warehouse District of downtown Cleveland
The best Spanish restaurant in the city - and a staple of the neighborhood since the mid-90’s; when the Warehouse District began over-taking the Flats as “the place to go” in Cleveland.
