Pastrami Over-Stuffed Sandwich at Panini’s in Downtown Cleveland, Ohio
Pastrami, Fried Egg, Provolone, Slaw, French Fries, and Tomato stuffed between thick-cut Italian Bread.
I get one of these after I hit up dollar beer night across the street with my buddies from work. All you have to do is throw on a packet of hot sauce, and this is some of the best drunk food money can buy.
[Yes, I’ve had Primanti Brothers. And yes, for once Pittsburgh is better than Cleveland; I’ll admit it.]

Trying to figure out if deep-fried starch in between two slices of starch would be any good. Leaning towards no. I love this picture, though.
Chicken Shawarma Hummus Plate at Sittoo’s in Parma, Ohio
The wonderful Miss Truhan - as her first and second grade students call her - found out about this place because of her nearby summer job, and it’s because of her that I know about it at all. She hadn’t been there in a long time, and I had never been; so we made the short drive with the windows down in this amazing fall weather we’ve had recently.
The food itself was awesome. Fresh, bright, bold - everything you’d want out of Middle Eastern food. The same family that started the chain of Aladdin’s has figured out a way to bring that same style of food in a cheaper form. Nothing on the menu tops $8, and all of the wraps (from Falaffel, to Kafta, to Shawarma) are under $5. The quality doesn’t suffer one bit, and definitely made me want to go back as soon as possible.
You absolutely have to get the fries. And you have to dip them in hummus. It puts drive-thru fries dipped in ketchup to shame.
100% on Urbanspoon with more than 25 50 votes is also insane. Not sure I’ve ever seen that before. This place is just amazing.
1/2 BBQ Chicken with Fries Lunch Special at Morgan’s Tavern and Grill in New Bern, NC
By the end of our trip, even I had eaten too much seafood; so I decided to try the 1/2 chicken. The restaurant itself was really “open” on the inside and had a cool feel to it; our waitress, Emily, was very good; and the place was already getting busy when we got there right after it opened - which is always a good sign. And for only $6.50, this lunch special was a crazy good deal.
Porky Fries at B Spot Burgers in Strongsville, Ohio
Pulled Pork, Cheese Whiz, and Pickled Chilies over Fries cooked in Lard.
Unbelievably good.
Lamb Gyro and Cajun Fries at Souvlaki’s Mediterranean Garden in Athens, Ohio
By all means, I should be out right now. I should be in a bar on the verge of doing something embarrassing (eg. dancing to Miley Cyrus, falling down the stairs) with my roommates right now. I only have 15 more weekends left at the greatest college in the US to party; but alas, I decided to take the night off (what a novel idea).
What does any that have to do with this post? Well, if I was out on the town tonight, there’s a good chance I’d be paying Souvlaki’s a visit.
Let’s put it in these terms: you can be sure you had a quality night at Ohio University when you look at your phone’s photos two days after the fact and go “….Ohhh yeahhh we DID have Souvlaki’s on Saturday… I remember now!”
I have to remember to talk to my guys at Kegfly.com about getting a deal set up for here, because that’d be amazing. If we do get a deal together; I’ll update for sure - video and all.
Pulled Pork Burger. Mike’s Bar and Grille; Berea, OH.
Eating Pulled Pork sandwiches are a bit of a religious experience to me. If I go to a BBQ place, that’s what I get. I used to be a ribs guy, but they’re too expensive and you don’t get enough food - in my mind. So obviously, I came seconds from ordering one. But then I saw this on the menu, and there was no debate. Bun, burger, cheese, pulled pork, bun. Done deal.
Now, I wouldn’t say that Mike’s has food that will blow you away; but they have a huge beer list, big portions (the fish fry on Fridays satisfied the biggest eater I know), and low-medium prices. And I like to support local places, so I definitely recommend.
