O’Betty’s in Athens, Ohio.
I grabbed a “Blaze” last weekend when I was in town for Homecoming. Rest assured, fellow alums - it’s still amazing. Just seeing this sign is total “drunk recall” moment for me.

Van Helsing Bloody Mary at Casa Nueva in Athens, Ohio
Garlic & Black Peppercorn (in-house) infused vodka, house-made Bloody Mary Mix.
One last Athens-related post, since we made it to the Sweet 16 and all last night.
GO BOBCATS!!! BEAT UNC (ha)!!!
Fried Chicken at Miller’s Chicken in Athens, Ohio
This was the place I demanded we go while visiting our alma mater. Sure, I would have ideally liked to hit up O’Betty’s (which we did), Kiser’s BBQ, and Salaam (neither of which we made it to). But this place was an absolute necessity.

Razz Wheat Beer at Jackie O’s in Athens, Ohio
Beer by Jackie O’s awesome brewers, shoes by Fred Perry, witty social commentary drawn on the table by hipsters.
Going back to Athens for the weekend was an awesome decision. So much drinking on patios. I love Athens.
Bruschetta and Fresh Spinach Pasta topped with Arrabbiata Sauce and Shrimp at Abrio’s Brick Oven in Athens, Ohio.
Since falling in love with all things involving peppers (in this case, chili peppers and roasted red bell peppers), Arrabbiatta sauce has been at the top of my list of things to order at Italian restaurants. This spicy red sauce from Abrio’s was no joke and the peppers were right in the forefront. Amazing way to end my Athens eating career.
This will (probably) be my last Athens post ever. That chapter of my life is over since I graduated from OU last weekend; and I’ve used up all my Athens posts that I had in the pipeline. On to the next adventure.
Rainbow and Dragon Rolls at Lui Lui in Athens, Ohio
One of my professors (definitely in my top three of all-time) suggested that we go around Athens and try restaurants that we always wanted to, as well as to hit up those “Athens classics” (O’Betty’s, Souvlaki’s, Miller’s Chicken, Salaam, etc.) one last time before we graduate. An OU Bucket List.
Lui Lui was on there for me, mainly because (to my knowledge) it’s one of the only two places in Athens that you can get sushi. So on one of my last Tuesdays in town (they only serve sushi on Tuesday), I made the trek across town.
The wait was way longer than you’d expect (they only had one sushi maker), and it barely could compare to my previous Rainbow Roll experience. But for $6 in Athens, Ohio - I’d definitely go back.
In honor of being 100% done with my undergraduate degree.
It’s been a great four years, Athens.
Cheers.
Tequila Shot at Casa Nueva in Athens, Ohio
I will almost never do a shot of Tequila under any circumstance. But were on a shuffle, and needed something quick. So I obliged.
I have a million other things I should be doing today, but I love this picture and figured it’d make a good post.
“The Blaze” at O’Bettys Red Hot in Athens, Ohio
Homemade creamy Coleslaw and smokey Bacon top this All-Beef Natural Casing Hot Dog. The combination is something that everyone’s gotta experience at least once before they graduate.
After getting it from the walk-up window late at night on many occasions, I finally got to eat inside a few weeks ago. Cross another thing off my OU bucket list…
The Big Pig from D.P. Dough in Athens, Ohio
I’m a huge fan of pulled pork, so when they added this one, I had to order it immediately.
To each his ‘zone.
Sun-dried Tomato & Mascarpone Ravioli at Restaurant Salaam in Athens, Ohio
The people here are a little strange and kinda hipster-ish, but the food was really good. This item was on the specials menu so I’m not even sure if they still have it. Regardless, this is one of my favorite pictures on the blog so far.
Cheese Sticks at Lucky’s Sports Tavern in Athens, OH
We were “shuffling” (what most non-OU people call a bar crawl) on Court Street, and I got hungry at the midway point, so we had to stop at Lucky’s for longer than just a shot.
These cheese sticks are your traditional mozzarella sticks taken to another level. They essentially cover the cheese in a funnel cake batter and fry it til it’s golden brown. So bad for your arteries; but so damn good.
Zoe Fine Dining in Athens, OH
Looking at the quick, non-scientific study of people I know around campus; you’d think burritos, subs, and bar food are the only dining options in Uptown Athens. Scott Bradley is trying to change that mindset.
Scott is the chef and owner of Zoe Fine Dining, which is less than a block off Court St. In 2008, they moved to their current location at 24 ½ East State Street; and in 2011 they were voted runner-up in the Best of Athens awards for restaurants. Zoe mixes in dishes that students may be familiar with (Steak Burger, multiple chicken dishes) with ones that diners might not have tried before (Wild Mushroom Crepes, Sauerbraten).
But the entrees that bring in the most repeat customers are the Flatiron Steak and the Roasted Salmon. Both come highly recommended from the wait staff, the chef, and anyone who’s had them. The waiters I talked to said they’d be willing to eat anything that comes out of Scott’s kitchen. That’s one of the best endorsements you can possibly hear from waiters at any restaurant.
KegFly.com’s “Pay $15, Get $35” coupon is a great opportunity to try something new. Remember, the deal’s also good on alcoholic beverages (with the purchase of food). I’d share the cost of the coupon with someone (or take date – Zoe is a great place for that). The two entrees that I’d personally suggest are the Flatiron Steak and the Crispy-Skinned Duck Breast. It’s a combination of something traditional (and their most-ordered dish), and something that many people haven’t ever tried, yet is a favorite among Zoe regulars. After that, you’ll still have a few dollars to order your favorite drinks – all for under $20.

Lamb Gyro and Cajun Fries at Souvlaki’s Mediterranean Garden in Athens, Ohio
By all means, I should be out right now. I should be in a bar on the verge of doing something embarrassing (eg. dancing to Miley Cyrus, falling down the stairs) with my roommates right now. I only have 15 more weekends left at the greatest college in the US to party; but alas, I decided to take the night off (what a novel idea).
What does any that have to do with this post? Well, if I was out on the town tonight, there’s a good chance I’d be paying Souvlaki’s a visit.
Let’s put it in these terms: you can be sure you had a quality night at Ohio University when you look at your phone’s photos two days after the fact and go “….Ohhh yeahhh we DID have Souvlaki’s on Saturday… I remember now!”
I have to remember to talk to my guys at Kegfly.com about getting a deal set up for here, because that’d be amazing. If we do get a deal together; I’ll update for sure - video and all.
